Virtual field trip: Greening the Desert

Watch: Permaculture Greening the Desert – Geoff Lawton

This amazing video is about terraforming (earth sculpting), used to capture water and reclaim the Jordanian desert. This was a project done in 2015 by Geoff Lawton, a Permaculture instructor.

I admire this project because it shows the restorative power of Permaculture design.

Admittedly, in recent years Permaculture has come under fire for the appropriation of indigenous wisdom and practices without giving credit, or support to, the source cultures.

Lawton revisited the site in 2025, and videos from the 10yr anniversary video are on his Instagram account “@geofflawtononline”
