Ignore-ance

The suffix -ant means “inclined to” or “tending to.” Dr. Brad Elliott Stone teaches that -ant is the suffix of action—thus, “to actively ignore.” Stone shows how white supremacist-designed educational systems train us to actively ignore—to normalize—racist behavior. This is what he calls “ignore-ant.” In a similar way, corporate-designed educational systems normalize consumerism, superfluous travel, and fossil fuel dependence. We are trained to overlook the very things which decimate ecosystems and cause global warming.
