About the Book

How can you achieve abundant harvests of rich, nourishing vegetables within a tight city footprint without a lot of gardener time and without having to buy a lot of “stuff”?

Why are we so concerned about high yields? What is more-sustainable, socially-responsible gardening? How do we tell whether we’re on the right track?

The Quest for Higher Yields is a collection of essays. They examine the philosophical framework that leads to sustainable and regenerative gardening. These short reflections explore sustainability, resilience, and Permaculture, including the consciousness shift that is needed for
•Organics
•Becoming a producer, rather than a consumer
•Reskilling
•Scaling up
•Low inputs and powerdown
•Reasons to grow food in today’s world

Every decision point within your gardening practice can lead you closer to —or further from— sustainability. Thus a philosophical understanding becomes a decision-making tool: to keep you on track for that overarching goal.

Through a decade of operations, the Community Garden at Holy Nativity has pondered these questions. This small garden in urban Los Angeles grows food for the local food pantry, and has produced year-round harvests since 2006.

The Quest for Higher Yields is Book 1 in the Abundant Harvest series. Other books in the series are how-to gardening books, which present the Garden’s hands-on approach to organic vegetable gardening.
This collection will be helpful to people who are involved with urban agriculture, organic gardening, sustainability and regeneration, carbon sequestration, Permaculture and the Transition movement, homesteading, community gardens, school gardens, and home vegetable gardens.
